If you are a citizen of Georgia and want to study in Hungary, you usually need first to be accepted by a Hungarian university, then apply for the right residence permit for study. The exact steps depend on your programme, your documents, and where you apply, so always check the university admissions page and the Hungarian immigration authority before you start.
1) The main route for study in Hungary
For most long-term degree studies, you do not start with a tourist stay. You usually need a study-related residence permit or visa route that leads to a residence permit for study. The university admission and the immigration process are separate, but they are linked.
- First, you apply to a university and wait for an admission offer.
- Then you use that offer to start the immigration process.
- You may need to show where you will live, how you will pay for your stay, and that you have valid health insurance.
Rules can change, so the safest source is the official Hungarian immigration authority and the university's own admissions page. If your programme is short, exchange-based, or part-time, the rules may be different.
2) What universities usually ask for
Each university can ask for different documents, but most programmes want proof that you can study the level and language of the course.
- Passport copy.
- Diploma or school leaving certificate.
- Transcripts or grade reports.
- English language proof, if the programme is taught in English.
- Sometimes a CV, motivation letter, portfolio, or entrance exam.
- For some subjects, extra tests, interviews, or subject-specific documents.
Document rules can be strict. Many universities want certified copies or official translations. Check the programme page for the exact format. If your documents are not in English or Hungarian, you may need a certified translation.
3) Proof of funds, housing, and insurance
For the residence permit, you usually need to show that you can support yourself during your stay. The authority may ask for bank statements, scholarship letters, a sponsor letter, or other proof of money. The exact amount is not the same for every case, so do not rely on a number you found in an old forum post.
- Proof of funds for tuition and living costs.
- Proof of accommodation, such as a dorm offer or rental agreement.
- Health insurance that is valid in Hungary.
- A valid passport with enough remaining validity.
If your university offers a dorm, it can help with both admissions and the visa file. If you will rent privately, keep the contract and landlord details ready.
4) Typical timeline from application to arrival
The process often takes longer than students expect. Start early. Many students begin preparing several months before the programme starts.
- University application: often opens months before the intake date.
- Admission review: can take from a few weeks to several months, depending on the programme.
- Visa or residence permit step: can also take weeks or longer, especially in busy periods.
- Travel and arrival planning: leave time for housing, insurance, and registration after arrival.
Do not book non-refundable travel too early. Wait until you understand the university decision and the immigration timeline. Check both the university calendar and the official immigration authority for current processing guidance.
5) Common reasons for refusal or delay
Many refusals are not about your grades. They happen because a document is missing, unclear, or does not match the rules.
- Incomplete application form or missing document.
- Bank proof that does not clearly show enough funds.
- Weak or missing proof of study purpose.
- Wrong translation or missing certification.
- Passport problems, such as low validity or unreadable copies.
- Housing or insurance that does not meet the requirement.
If you are refused, read the reason carefully. In some cases you can correct the file and apply again. But do not guess. Follow the instructions from the university or the immigration office.
6) How to get noticed before you apply
Admissions teams often look for students before they receive a full application. If you create a strong profile, you can be easier to find.
- Write your field of interest clearly, such as business, IT, engineering, or medicine.
- Add your latest education level and grades if you have them.
- State your English level honestly.
- Upload the documents you already have, even if your full application is not ready yet.
- Keep your study goals short and clear.
This does not replace the university application. It just helps admissions offices find students like you and contact you first if they are searching for your profile.
Common questions
Do I need a visa before I apply to a university?
No. Usually you first apply for admission, then use the admission result for the visa or residence permit step. Check the university and the official immigration authority for your exact route.
Can I study in English in Hungary?
Yes, many Hungarian universities offer English-taught programmes. Still, each programme decides its own language requirement, so check the programme page for the accepted test types and scores.
How much money do I need to show?
There is no one fixed number that fits every case. The immigration authority may ask for proof that you can cover tuition and living costs, so check the official requirements for the current rules and accepted documents.
