Hungary offers English-taught game design and media programmes at several universities. You can join bachelor or master degrees if you meet the academic and portfolio requirements.
Which degree levels exist
Most students start with a bachelor programme in media design, animation, or digital art with a focus on games. These usually take three to four years. If you already hold an undergraduate degree, you can apply for a master programme to specialise further in game development, programming, or digital production.
Entry requirements and portfolio
Universities look at your previous education, your English language skills, and a portfolio. You will typically need:
- A high school diploma for bachelor courses or a university degree for master courses
- Proof of English proficiency, such as IELTS or TOEFL scores
- A portfolio showing your drawings, 3D models, coding projects, or game mods
- A motivational letter and an online interview
Check the university admissions page for exact score cutoffs and specific portfolio formats.
Tuition fees and living costs
Tuition fees vary depending on your citizenship and the specific institution. EU students often pay lower rates than non-EU students. Typical ranges span from two thousand to six thousand euros per year. Living costs in Budapest or other student cities are moderate compared to Western Europe. Budget for rent, food, and transport, and check the scholarship page of the university for partial funding options.
Timeline and application steps
Planning your move early helps you secure housing and prepare your documents. Follow these steps:
- Research programmes on university websites nine to twelve months before term starts
- Prepare your portfolio and take your English language test
- Submit your application through the official university portal
- Apply for your student visa at the national immigration authority once admitted
Common questions
Do I need to speak Hungarian to study game design?
No. Many universities offer full degree programmes taught entirely in English for international students.
Can I work while studying in Hungary?
Yes. International students from outside the EU and EEA typically have limits on working hours, while EU students enjoy more flexibility. Check current work permit rules with the national immigration authority.
How do I apply for a student visa?
You apply at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in your home country after receiving your official university acceptance letter.
