Study Computer Science in Spain: Admission and Costs

3 min read · 2026-10-21

If you want to study computer science in Spain, you can usually choose between a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. The exact entry rules, language of teaching, and costs depend on the university, so always check the programme page and the official admissions page before you apply.

Spain has many public and private universities, and some programmes are taught in English, especially at master's level. You can start by checking the university's website, then compare entry requirements, tuition, language level, and deadlines.

Which study level fits you?

Computer science in Spain is usually offered at two main levels:

  • Bachelor's degree - for students starting higher education after secondary school.
  • Master's degree - for students who already have a relevant bachelor's degree.

A bachelor's degree is often the first path if you want a full computer science education from the beginning. A master's degree is usually shorter and more specialised, for example in artificial intelligence, data science, software engineering, cybersecurity, or computer vision.

If you are not sure which level fits you, look at the programme name and the entry requirements on the university website. Some master's programmes accept students from related fields, while others expect a strong background in computing or mathematics.

Typical admission requirements

Universities in Spain usually ask for a mix of academic documents, language proof, and identity documents. The exact list can change by university and programme.

  • Completed secondary school diploma for a bachelor's degree, or a bachelor's degree for a master's degree.
  • Official transcripts or grade reports.
  • Passport or national ID.
  • Proof of language level, if required.
  • Motivation letter or statement of purpose, for some programmes.
  • CV, recommendation letters, or a portfolio, mainly for some master's programmes.

For bachelor's degrees, students from outside Spain may also need their school qualification recognised or checked for access. The process depends on your country and on whether you apply through a public or private university. The safest source is the university admissions office and the official Spanish education authority or regional admissions system.

For master's degrees, universities usually look at your previous degree, grades, and how well your background matches the programme. Some programmes may also interview you or ask for proof of programming knowledge.

English-taught options and language

Many computer science programmes in Spain are taught in Spanish. English-taught options do exist, but they are more common at master's level and at some private universities or international tracks.

Before you apply, check:

  • Whether the whole programme is in English or only some courses.
  • Which language certificate is accepted.
  • The minimum score or level, if the university lists one.

Universities may accept different tests, such as IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge exams, or other recognised proof of English. For Spanish-taught programmes, you may need Spanish language proof such as DELE or SIELE, depending on the university.

Do not assume that a programme marked as

Rules, fees and deadlines change. Check the university's own admissions page and the official immigration site of the country before you act on anything here.
