Study Finance in Sweden: Admissions, Costs & Steps

3 min read · 2026-10-21

You can study finance in Sweden at bachelor and master level. Both levels have many English‑taught programmes. Below you will find the main steps, costs and where to start.

Study levels and programmes

Swedish universities offer two main levels for finance.

  • Bachelor (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration) - usually three years. You study core finance, economics and business subjects.
  • Master (Master of Science in Finance) - usually one or two years after a relevant bachelor. You can specialise in corporate finance, investment, risk or sustainable finance.

All programmes listed as "English‑taught" are open to international students. Check each university’s admission page for the exact name of the programme.

Entry requirements

Requirements differ for EU/EEA and non‑EU students, but the basic pattern is similar.

  • Completed secondary school for a bachelor degree. You need a recognised high‑school diploma and at least 2‑3 years of study in a relevant field.
  • For a master, a relevant bachelor degree with at least 180 ECTS credits. Some programmes accept related subjects like economics or mathematics.
  • English proficiency - typically IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or an equivalent certificate. Some universities accept a Cambridge certificate.
  • Academic record - usually a GPA of 2.5/4.0 or higher. Exact thresholds are shown on the programme page.

Official details are on the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) and the university’s admissions page.

Tuition fees and living costs

Sweden charges tuition for non‑EU/EEA students. EU/EEA students study for free, but you still pay fees for living.

  • Non‑EU tuition - typically between 8 000 and 15 000 EUR per year for finance programmes. Exact amounts vary by university.
  • Living costs - typically 1 000 to 1 300 EUR per month. This covers accommodation, food, transport and study material.
  • Scholarships - many universities offer tuition waivers for excellent applicants. Look for scholarships on the university’s site and on Study in Sweden.

Check the national immigration authority (Migrationsverket) for the latest fee rules and scholarship information.

Application timeline

Plan your steps early. Swedish universities usually follow a two‑round system.

  1. Round 1 - application deadline in mid‑January. This is the best time for scholarships.
  2. Round 2 - application deadline in mid‑July. Some programmes accept late applications, but funding is limited.

After you submit, the university evaluates your file. You will receive a decision within 4‑6 weeks. If you are accepted, you apply for a residence permit through Migrationsverket. Start the permit process as soon as you receive the admission letter.

How universities find candidates

Swedish universities use a national portal called University Admissions (Universityadmissions.se). You create an account, upload your documents and select the programmes you want.

Admissions offices can also search external registers that list free profiles of students. When you create a profile on Eduuro, you list your field, education level, English level and upload your transcripts and passport. Universities that need finance students can search for exactly that profile and write to you first.

Common questions

Do I need a student visa?

Yes, if you are a non‑EU/EEA citizen and plan to stay longer than 90 days. Apply through the Swedish Migration Agency after you receive an admission letter.

Can I work while studying?

Non‑EU students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full time during holidays. Check the migration authority for the latest work‑permit rules.

What if I do not meet the GPA requirement?

Some universities consider a strong motivation letter, relevant work experience or additional tests. Contact the admissions office for advice.

How Eduuro helps

Create a free profile with your field, education level, English level and documents. Admissions offices that search for exactly that can find you and write first.

Rules, fees and deadlines change. Check the university's own admissions page and the official immigration site of the country before you act on anything here.
