Studying mathematics in Belgium gives you access to strong universities with diverse undergraduate and graduate programmes. You will need to meet specific academic requirements, check language options, and budget for tuition and living costs.
Choosing your degree level
Belgium uses the European higher education system. You can choose from two main cycles in mathematics:
- Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, typically lasting three years.
- Master of Science in Mathematics, typically lasting one or two years.
Language requirements and English options
While many bachelor programmes are taught in Dutch or French, several universities offer master degrees entirely in English. If you apply for a foreign language track, you must prove your proficiency through tests like IELTS or TOEFL. Always check the programme page for exact score thresholds.
Entry requirements for international students
To enter a bachelor programme, you need a secondary school diploma that qualifies you for university entrance in your home country. Some institutions require an entrance exam for mathematics or science. For master programmes, you need a relevant undergraduate degree in mathematics or a closely related field with good grades.
Tuition fees and living costs
Tuition fees in Belgium vary depending on your nationality and the community you study in. EU students typically pay lower regulated fees, while non-EU students pay higher rates set by each institution. Plan for monthly living costs covering housing, food, transport, and health insurance. Check the national immigration authority website for official proof of funds required for your visa.
Timeline and application steps
Admissions usually open several months before the academic year starts in September. You should begin preparing your documents, such as transcripts and language certificates, early in the year. Check the university admissions page for exact deadlines, as they differ between EU and non-EU applicants.
